Church of St. Joseph

  • Omišalj

The Church of St. Joseph in Voz was built in 1784 on the private estate of Nicolò Baffo, in order to enable the celebration of Sunday services, at least occasionally. The church probably also served the needs of participants in the seasonal tuna fishing, which was regularly practised in this area.

The chapel is located in the immediate vicinity of the sea, next to the former ferry pier, and it still brings together the residents of Omišalj on the feast of St. Joseph, celebrated on 19 March. Due to its exposure to the bora wind and other adverse weather conditions, it requires frequent repairs. It was significantly enlarged in the early 19th century, when it was remodelled in the spirit of Classicism and provided with a tall bell-cote above the façade.
