The Mila Kumbatović and Oton Gliha Memorial House

  • Omišalj

In this traditional house in Omišalj, two great figures of Croatian fine art lived and worked for decades: Mila Kumbatović (1915–2004) and Oton Gliha (1914–1999). Mila Kumbatović, a native of Omišalj, paid tribute to her homeland through the consistent use of its distinctive landscape as a source of inspiration. This was a constant throughout her artistic career, during which she moved from Cézannism to fully abstract painting, as well as to experiments with industrial sculpture. Oton Gliha, one of the greatest Croatian painters of the second half of the 20th century, was the husband of Mila Kumbatović, whom he met while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Originally from Istria, he lived in his youth in Slovenia, Slavonia, and Zagreb. He became internationally renowned for his paintings of gromače — the dry-stone walls of the island of Krk — which in his interpretation turned into abstract stone lace.
