Let's add to that a number of excellent concerts, street entertainers, numerous workshops for the little ones and rich all-day entertainment for the whole family.
Ancient days are also an essential part of the summer in Omišlj: at the authentic location of the ancient Roman city of Fulfinum - Mirine, the ancient Romans return from summer to summer to show the modern audience how they lived, enjoyed, had fun and fought in Mirine in their time. In addition to the presentation of the way of life and work of the Romans from Omisal, the most attractive part of Ancient Days is certainly the Roman legionnaires and gladiator fights - who will survive is decided, of course - Caesar!
The traditional folk festival Stomorina, which takes place every year on August 16, will provide all visitors with an authentic experience of centuries-old tradition in Omišlj. Stomorina or Vela Gospoja, as she is also called in Omišlj, is a holiday that celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that is, the feast of Rokova, and which is accompanied by a unique program and a series of cultural and entertainment events. Autumn
Bathed in warm colors such as orange, red and yellow, autumn in the area of Omišalj and Njivica is the perfect backdrop for a thorough exploration of the rich historical heritage of this part of the island of Krk. The starting point for truly getting to know this region are certainly the remains of the ancient city of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum from the second half of the 1st century AD, and the early Christian basilica from the 5th century AD. In this area, not far from Omišalj, you will find various buildings from the Roman era, such as the remains of a forum, a temple, a basilica and other imposing buildings...
The remains found are preserved in the Omišalj Lapidary collection, which is definitely worth a visit: this collection of movable cultural assets forms a whole with "in situ" preserved monuments in its immediate vicinity, and also preserves an inscription about the construction of the ancient Fulfinum waterworks.
Once the road takes you to the old town of Omišalj, be sure to explore the stone streets and squares that this place, steeped in history, hides. They will reveal to you some of their pearls: Marangunija - the carpentry workshop of Tom Lesica, the last self-taught Glagolitic speaker from Krk; Memorial home of Krk folklore that preserves the most beautiful of the island's traditional heritage; memorial house of Croatian art giants Mila Kumbatović and Oton Gliha... And indelible traces of some long-gone times, valuable hands and names that no one has responded to for a long time.
Smitir in the heart of Omišalj is also particularly interesting: the former Omišalj cemetery is located in an unimaginable place today, in the heart of Omišalj, and its existence is still evidenced by crosses and stone remains of tombstones. Namely, the deceased were buried in the immediate vicinity of the church from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 19th century.
Just a few steps away, during the Renaissance, there was a town lodge on the Square. Stop there and for a moment sail away to the time of the Krk princes, when trade, deliberation and important decisions were made here. Today, it houses an interesting Malacological collection, which preserves a collection of 675 specimens of snails, bivalves and cephalopods. If you find yourself in Omišlja at the end of the day, be sure to stop at the Vela Steni viewpoint with a view of Učka, and then take a walk in the romantic Dubec Park, a real monument of landscape architecture from the first half of the 20th century.
Let your research definitely take you to the church of St. Anthony of Padua, the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the church of St. Jelena, because traces of the rich history of this region are hidden in numerous sacred buildings, but also in stone houses that are a living monument to traditional construction and life as it once was.
Allow your curiosity to prevail and your gaze to wander in all directions: if you look up, you could, for example, discover a rosette - a small round stone window on the parish church with a Glagolitic inscription from 1405, proudly signed by the master stonemason Sinoga from Omišalj.
