Omišalj – Fulfinum Mirine – Fortičina – Omišalj
In the footsteps of the Romans
The hiking trail from Omišalj to the Fulfinum Mirine archaeological site offers a unique combination of cultural and historical experience and natural beauty of the island. Start exploring this part of the island of Krk from Omišalj, a picturesque town whose spirit of past times and rich cultural and historical heritage lives in every corner. The settlement located on an 85 m high cliff hides narrow stone streets, rows of houses and numerous historical monuments.
After exploring the old city center, head through the Dubec park towards the sea. This exceptional monument of landscape architecture from the first half of the last century is decorated with landscaped paths and rest areas, while the air is ennobled by conifers, plants and fragrant flowers. Stop at one of the viewpoints and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and the entire Rijeka bay.
You continue along the coastal promenade to Pesja Bay and then to Sepen Bay, where the Roman town of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum sprang up in the 1st century. The remains of the ancient municipium and the early Christian basilica tell the story of the first traces of settlement in this area and the way of life at that time. After a break in the Mirine complex, you continue towards the hill above the Omišalj bay, where you will come across the remains of the Fortičina fortress. The position overlooking the harbor and the settlement itself has been an important strategic point for centuries. The nearby spring was used by the people of Omišalj for water supply, and it was also used as the source of the ancient Fulfinum's water supply system. The fortress, based on traces of a late antique or early medieval watchtower, also provides information about the castles of the Krk princes of the Zrinskis, built at the end of the 12th and during the 13th century.
The hiking trail from Omišalj to the Fulfinum Mirine archaeological site offers a perfect combination of natural beauty and rich history. This trail is ideal for families and recreationists who want to combine physical activity with cultural exploration.
